Nominations Sought for 2008 Morris Dees Justice Award more »
Nominations are now being accepted for the 2008 Morris Dees Justice Award, an honor jointly sponsored by Skadden Arps Meagher & Flom and the Law School. The award will be presented to a lawyer who has devoted himself or herself to justice and public service and whose work has brought about positive change in the community, state, or nation. Nominations must be submitted by July 31.

We were saddened to lose Judge Sam C. Pointer, Jr. ’57 earlier this year. Judge Pointer was a nationally respected former federal judge who was revered for his high respect of the law, tolerance of others, sharp intellect, and attention to detail. He will also be remembered for his expertise in handling cutting-edge, complex litigation. To honor the memory of Judge Pointer, his former firm of Lightfoot, Franklin & White, LLC and his former law clerks are establishing the Judge Sam C. Pointer Endowed Scholarship Fund. Current plans call for the scholarship to be awarded annually to the incoming editor-in-chief of the Alabama Law Review, to be applied to his or her third year of law school.

On July 11th, UA Law is hosting a Farrah Order of Jurisprudence/Order of the Coif Breakfast as well as our alumni reception during this year’s Alabama State Bar meeting in Destin. Alumni who are planning to attend the UA Law reception and Order of the Coif Members who are planning to attend the breakfast must pre-register through the Alabama Bar Association.

Meador Lecture series, the UA Law faculty identifies an interdisciplinary theme and invites several scholars to illuminate the concept from his or her scholarly perspective. The initiative began in 1994 to honor the University of Alabama School of Law's former Professor and Dean who is now the James Monroe Professor of Law Emeritus at the University of Virginia.

On Friday, April 11, the University of Alabama School of Law hosted a symposium to chart the complex ways in which law consumes, uses, and is influenced by science. The one-day conference titled, “Legal Doubt, Scientific Certainty: What Scientific Knowledge does for and to the Law,” was led by noted scholars from the law schools at Harvard, UCLA, Notre Dame, and Wisconsin.

The University of Alabama School of Law is ranked 11th among public law schools and 32nd among all law schools in the nation, according to U.S. News and World Report’s 2009 edition of its annual “Best Graduate Schools” publication. The 2009 ranking is the highest ever for UA Law School, eclipsing last year’s mark of 15th among public law schools and 36th among all law schools.

Justice Stephen Breyer Speaks in 2006
The University of Alabama School of Law proudly announces five new faculty members will join the Law School during the 2008-09 academic year.
In the last two years, 11 new faculty members have been added in conjunction with a 90,000 square feet expansion of the Law School’s facilities. This growth – in faculty and facilities – caters to UA Law’s consistent baseline of approximately 515 students.
Phillip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Team Places Second in Super Regional Competition, Secures Berth in D.C. Tournament
The Law School’s Phillip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Team – led by Professor Bryan Fair and comprised of Maridi Thompson, Jamie McKaskill, Emily Price, Joseph Hutchings, and Monica Soderlund – recently competed in the International Moot Court Competition’s Super Regional tournament against 21 other teams in the in Miami.
The Jessup Team defeated competitors from many outstanding schools including Duke, Emory, William & Mary, Tennessee, and Wake Forest, among others. In addition, Joe Hutchins was named the “Best Advocate” out of nearly 120 advocates. As Regional Runner-Up in the Southeast, our team will be one of 12 teams from the U.S. to compete in the international rounds in six weeks against others from around the world.

On April 11, 2008, the University of Alabama School of Law will host its third symposium in the “Law, Knowledge & Imagination” series titled “Legal Doubt, Scientific Certainty: What Scientific Law Does for and to Law.” This event will chart the complex ways in which law consumes, uses, and is influenced by scientific information.
The event will feature legal and scientific experts from Harvard University, the University of California – Los Angeles, and the University of Wisconsin debating the often controversial role of science in law.
Jr. Farrah Law Alumni Society Barbeque Bash
A Barbecue Bash, sponsored by the Jr. Farrah Law Alumni Society on behalf of the Classes of 2003-2007, was held at the Law School on Saturday, January 26.
